Dozens attend pro-marijuana rally in York City

Fairly often, the beeping of car horns drowned out parts of what the speakers were saying to the crowd. But they didn't seem to mind.

After all, the noisy motorists were obeying one of the signs the crowd was holding up: "Honk for hemp."

About 50 people gathered Saturday afternoon in the southeastern quadrant of Continental Square in York City, coalescing at the corner of George and Market streets to show support for full or partial legalization of marijuana and to hear several people speak in an rally hosted by Keystone Cannabis Coalition.

Several people spoke about the various reasons why they wanted pot to be legal — for reasons medical to criminal-justice based, or just because they felt like they should be able to smoke it if they want to do so.

Report: Parents upset with crackdown over marijuana at northern Colorado school

GREELEY, Colo. — Parents at a private school in Greeley are upset with the response by administrators to reports of the use and sale of marijuana by students and they are demanding a meeting with school officials.

According to records obtained by the Greeley Tribune, parents sent emails to administrators at University Schools complaining about what they called interrogation-style interviews and the search of student cellphones at the K-12 public charter school located in Greeley School District 6.

The University Schools Board of Governors will hold a special meeting Monday to determine if policy changes need to be made.

Administrators said the searches are necessary to keep the school safe.

Legal highs: Psychoactive drugs policy 'rushed', say MPs

Legislation to ban new psychoactive substances in the UK is being rushed, MPs have warned.

The Home Affairs Committee said ministers were not working properly with their own expert drug advisers.

The MPs also said past governments' spending on education about the dangers of so-called legal highs had been "shockingly inadequate to date".

Policing minister Mike Penning said the government would consider the committee's criticism.

New psychoactive substances (NPS) are products chemically designed to mimic drugs that are already banned. Some 67 deaths in England and Wales last year were linked to their use.

Lies, Damn Lies and Government Statistics

Besides the fact that Psychoactive Substances Bill is one of the worst pieces of attempted legislation since the Misuse of Drugs Act in 1971 as currently;
  • Psychoactive is not defined in a way which will satisfy the scientists or the courts
  • No one is exactly sure which things are legal and which things are not
  • No one has a clue how police are going to detect or enforce this

Medical marijuana caregivers face legal battles

TRAVERSE CITY — A Traverse Narcotics Team search of a burned Garfield Township barn harvested 95 marijuana plants.

Or 75 plants.

A police report generated after the July warrant search yielded both tallies, and the difference could be important if three Garfield Township residents — Fredric John York Sr., 56, Karyn Marie York, 50, and Fredric John York Jr., 27 — try to fight felony manufacture of marijuana charges.

Can an applicant with a marijuana possession conviction get a visa?

David was 17 years old when he entered the United States on a student visa. In 2000, he was convicted of a misdemeanor—marijuana possession for having 5 grams of marijuana within the vicinity of his school.

After his conviction, and completion of his sentence, David’s parents compelled David to return to the Philippines instead of facing removal proceedings before an immigration judge.

David’s father filed an immigrant petition on his behalf, and in October his priority date became current. He is now ready to apply for his immigrant visa “green card” application with the US Embassy in Manila.

Despite the fact that David’s conviction occurred 15 years ago, David will need to disclose the conviction in his immigrant visa application.

The Mystery of the UK's Latest Drug Prosecution Figures

In an interesting example of the often Kafkaesque irrationality of the war on drugs, figures obtained by Release show that in the UK you are now far more likely to be prosecuted if you are caught carrying Class B or Class C drugs such as cannabis or benzodiazepines, than if you are found carrying class A drugs such as ecstasy, LSD, or cocaine, that the government considers to be more dangerous.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights urges governments to support decriminalisation and harm reduction

Ahead of the United Nations General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) on the World Drug Problem that will take place in New York in April 2016, senior representatives of several United Nations agencies have taken part in a high-level multi-stakeholder perspective in Geneva, Switzerland. The aim of the event was to explore ways to transform the current drug control system into a measurable response that is people-centered and grounded in respect for public health concerns and human rights.

The meeting, co-hosted and co-chaired by Switzerland and Colombia, covered several key themes that will be further debated during preparatory consultations by the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna in the run-up to the UNGASS.
