FEDERAL ELECTION: We asked what the government should do about marijuana

As a regular feature leading up to the Oct. 19 federal election, we will ask you to weigh in on issues that matter.

Last week, we asked:

How should the marijuana issue be handled?

Here’s what you said:

“I think it should be decriminalized because it would mean more control over distribution and it could be regulated.”

Linda Guenther, Aurora

“We should go back to allowing those with a medical license to grow their own because we have just created a conglomerate culture and people who need it are having trouble getting it. The current policy is great for business, but not people.”

Michael Smith, Aurora

Pot and banking don’t mix, the Ohio Bankers League said Wednesday in opposing a November election proposal to legalize marijuana.

At 'Checkpoint Of The Stars,' Texas Sheriff Takes A Pass On Pot Cases

A federal inspection station on Interstate 10 in the West Texas desert earned the nickname "checkpoint of the starsfor all the entertainers who kept getting busted there. In the past six years, Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg, Nelly and Fiona Apple were all arrested for possession of marijuana.

These days, though, after a decision by a local lawman, everyone from personal pot smokers to medium-size marijuana traffickers can avoid jail.

The Sierra Blanca Border Patrol checkpoint was once the bane of pot smokers driving from Los Angeles to Texas. Green-suited federal agents and their uncanny drug dogs would make 20 to 30 busts a day.

7 Presidential Hopefuls Lying about Pot

With 2016 due to be a huge year for marijuana legalization advocates, the questions have been coming fast and hard at next year’s presidential candidates – about both their personal feelings on cannabis, and how they would address marijuana policy.

Some of the responses we’ve heard have included blatant falsities – if not outright lies. This, of course, is to be expected during campaign season. But with marijuana legalization’s fate largely resting in the hands of the next administration, hearing candidates spout lies about, or exhibit a failure to understand cannabis in the least bit, is disheartening.

Here are seven of those big lies, and which candidates are espousing them.
