Global Biosimilars Market Value Could Hit $55B by 2020

The global biosimilars market value is expected to reach $20 billion by the end of 2015 and could hit $55 billion by 2020, with growth primarily driven by a promising pipeline in active development and government efforts to reduce healthcare spending, according to business intelligence provider GBI Research.

The company’s latest CBR Pharma report states that biologics currently account for between 17–20 percent of the pharmaceutical arena, with a value of nearly $200 billion, and these products may replace 70 percent of chemical drugs in the next two decades.

The 30 percent to 50 percent reduction in biosimilar prices compared with branded biologics could lead to considerable savings in healthcare expenditure.

Banned, but Bountiful: Marijuana Coveted by NFL Players as Invaluable Painkiller

Without naming particular teams or players, many in the NFL acknowledge marijuana is a popular treatment for the aches and pains of postgame recovery.

Jamal Anderson was a talented NFL running back with a bruising style who rushed for over 5,000 yards while playing for the Atlanta Falcons. It was a more physical league during Anderson's time, and he retired in 2001 after an eight-year playing career. It was nastier. More punishing. More measures taken by players to ease the pain of playing in the sport.

Anderson remembers the prevalent use of marijuana when he was in the game. It was used for enjoyment but also as treatment for the aches and bruises caused by professional football.

Cannabis use may lead to weight gain

Long-term cannabis use may lead to weight gain, especially among men, says a new research.

"It is known - and often reported by users - that cannabis causes temporary increase in appetite. As to whether it actually causes weight gain in the long term, the available data is limited," said Didier Jutras-Aswad, professor at University of Montreal in Canada.

"The main finding of our study shows that long-term cannabis use indeed influences weight gain," Jutras-Aswad said.

"But above all, we noted that certain factors drastically modify this effect, including gender, level of use, and concomitant cigarette smoking," Jutras-Aswad added.

Medicinal dagga: Can dangers be ignored?

There is not sufficient evidence to support the potential medicinal benefit from cannabis use cautions an academic from Stellenbosch University.

The BBC reports that Dagga is the most common illicit drug abused in South Africa and while some people argue that it holds medicinal benefits, a psychiatrist from the Stellenbosch University maintains that there is not yet enough evidence to support this.

“Although this drug is viewed as an innocent herb by many, there is increasing concern about adverse health consequences,” said Dr Lize Weich, senior psychiatrist and lecturer at Stellenbosch University.

She said there is concern about the popular belief that cannabis is “medicinal” and thus “harmless and safe”, especially among children and adolescents.

I Got A Marijuana Prescription And Pot In Minutes Without Leaving My Couch

I’ll begin this story with a disclaimer: I rarely smoke weed. Aside from the few times that I’ve tried it recreationally, marijuana has never really appealed to me as it does to the millions of Americans who light up for medical purposes or just for fun.

Medical marijuana centre opens in Ottawa

Ottawa’s first centre for access to medical marijuana is now open. “We are excited to give Ottawa residents the resources and professional guidance needed to access Health Canada’s legal medical cannabis program safely and responsibly with pharmacist and physician support,” said Gulwant Bajwa, CEO of National Access Cannabis.

Members wishing to use this service are connected with a physician for a medical assessment and NAC will help with selecting a licensed producer and submitting the required Health Canada medical documents.

UK: Jail sentence cut for cannabis-growing war veteran

Scott Darroch was caught with 150 plants worth more than £20,000.

A WAR veteran suffering combat stress who was jailed for growing cannabis has had his three-year sentence cut after judges ruled it was excessive

Scott Darroch was caught with 150 plants worth more than £20,000 in his isolated farmhouse in Skelmorlie, Ayrshire, in April 2014.

In January, Sheriff Shirley Foran jailed the former Royal Engineer - who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo - after he admitted producing and being concerned in supplying cannabis.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court had heard Darroch, 42, suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and often checked streets for roadside bombs, believing he was still on active service.

Ireland: Man Appeals For Cannabis Oil To Prolong Life

Kieran McCrory talks candidly about having three to five years to live. The former painter and decorator from Omagh has stage four brain cancer and doctors have emphasised, “Kieran, this will eventually get you.”

And yet, despite everything – the brain surgery, the subsequent paralysis and dire realisation that he is terminally ill, the 37-year-old is stubbornly upbeat about life. He’s a father and a husband and he has a large group of friends and family who have been, he says, a massive source of support over the past few months.

One thing which is proving to be a real bugbear of Kieran’s however, is the British Government’s attitude to medicinal cannabis.

Florida Still Playing Medical Marijuana Waiting Game

Even though it has been nearly a year since the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act was signed into law by Florida Gov. Rick Scott, the process to make available “Charlotte’s Web,” a non-euphoric strain of marijuana, is still a little ways off.

Extract from the plant can be used to treat patients suffering from epileptic seizures and other related disorders.
