Home is where the edibles are in Manitoba.
As Legalization 2.0 brings a wave of cannabis edibles and extracts to Canada’s store shelves later this year, Manitoba is taking impending arrivals very seriously. The province has stated its intention to make the public consumption of the drug in all its forms illegal, even if a tweak to legislation is required, the Times-Colonist reported.
“We’ll have to look, probably, at the wording through an amendment if necessary,” Premier Brian Pallister said. “But the intention of the law is … that we’re making illegal the public consumption of goods whether smoking, as smoking is illegal now … but also on the consumption of edible products.”
The province’s laws governing marijuana were originally written with smoking and vaping in mind, so adjustments may need to be made. But residents who choose to partake in cannabis-infused goodies in parks, streets and other public areas are subject to the same $672 fine if caught.
Wab Kinew, the opposition NDP leader, said this approach is heavy-handed and those who want to enjoy the drug in a non-smokable form should be given leniency because edibles don’t carry the same risk to others that a joint might. “There can be flexibility when it comes to edibles because they’re a bit different than when you smoke weed,” he said. “The difference is there’s not the second-hand smoke harming another person.”
Manitoba has strictly banned cannabis consumption in schools, vehicles and boats and is not letting residents to grow pot plants at home, despite the federal government allowing up to four plants per residence.
The province is also launching a new round of advertisements to raise awareness of potential hazards of cannabis use — this time focused on edibles.
The Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba, the province’s regulator, is spending some $450,000 on pamphlets and ads with a series of messages. One warns people to store edibles away from children and pets. Another cautions people to “point out the pot” and let others know if food they are being served contains cannabis.
In the event you overestimate the strength of your edible and find yourself far too high in public, you’re probably safe for the time being. Tests for the drug in the human body have proven “wildly inaccurate” and won’t be available anytime soon.
Just don’t get caught celebrating.
