Why corporate governance is more important now than ever

When a new industry emerges, investors who are on the frontier are often the ones reaping the out-sized rewards. Such is the case with many Canadian cannabis investors and innovators - the Canadian cannabis industry has ballooned into gigantic proportions, with the money early investors put into such enterprises ballooning in a corresponding fashion.

When stock prices appreciate in such a manner, and buyouts, mergers, and acquisitions happen on an increasingly more frequent basis, concerns about corporate governance can begin to emerge as investors begin to look deeper into the entangled nature of the growing company they have invested in.

Pot sales permits in Edmonton up to lottery draw

City councillors agree to random selection for deciding who gets a permit to sell cannabis.

Cannabis retailers hoping to set up shop in Edmonton will have to bank on the luck of the draw.

The city's urban planning committee voted in favour of a lottery system Tuesday to choose who will get a development permit to sell pot.

Councillors Michael Walters said the random selection process puts small and big companies on the same playing field.

"What we're trying to do is create a sense of fairness," Walters said after the decision. "There's a lot of interest in setting up cannabis business in Edmonton, from a variety of proponents from a variety of capacities."

In case you missed it, profit estimates for marijuana stocks in 2019 are still falling

Despite rapidly growing sales, pot stocks may not be as profitable as once believed.

In just 15 days, the wheels are likely to be set in motion to make adult-use marijuana legal in our neighbor to the north. On June 7th, Canada's Senate will vote on the Cannabis Act, with a positive outcome expected to lead to recreational legalization not long after. By August or September, roughly eight to 12 weeks after the bill is signed into law, adults aged 18 and over will be able to legally purchase marijuana in Canada.

Reach for the pot: Medical grow-op planned for Barachois Brook

Cannabis company is currently renovating one structure, building another.

If things go according to plan, the Back Home Medical Cannabis Corporation will soon be providing medical cannabis — and jobs — to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The company is planning a large, high-tech pot grow operation for Barachois Brook near Stephenville, with hopes of having product available by the time it's legalized later this year.

"We've got, I think, probably as good an opportunity to be a very successful company as any on the globe," said David Callahan, the president of Back Home Medical Cannabis, which is owned by Biome Grow.

Pete Patterson: Vitalis' botanical extraction systems

Pete Patterson loves to see people's reaction when he tells them he makes the machinery used to process marijuana.

Some are shocked and taken aback, after all, cannabis used to be an illegal drug.

Others are impressed and think it's cool Patterson is capitalizing on a thoroughly modern and lucrative business sector.

"When we first started Vitalis Extraction Technology, I used to cover my mouth and say what business I was in quietly," said Patterson, who is the company's co-founder and chief operating officer.

"Now, I'm very open about it. It's not taboo anymore. We don't touch the plant."
