How does BC stack up to the rest of Canada when it comes to cannabis consumption and distribution?

Data released by Statistics Canada provides new information about the amount of cannabis Canadians consumed in 2017.

The so-called cannabis provincial and territorial economic accounts are based on estimates detailing the production, consumption, and distribution of cannabis in Canada's different economies.

According to the accounts, approximately 4.9 million Canadians aged 15 to 64 spent a combined total of roughly $5.6 million on cannabis for both medical and recreational purposes, with consumption varying greatly from one region to the next.

Marijuana legalization should be put off until First Nations tax sharing worked out: Senate committee

First Nations say their governments will face new social challenges from legal cannabis.

Members of the Senate's Aboriginal peoples committee are recommending the Liberal government hold back on legalizing cannabis for up to a year in order to address its potential for harmful effects in Indigenous communities.

The committee, chaired by Liberal Saskatchewan Sen. Lillian Dyck, said in its report on Bill C-45 that the government simply did not consult enough with First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities before pushing ahead with its plan to legalize the drug.

Nurse, doctor worry use of the soon-to-be-legal drug will exacerbate existing problems.

Alberta medical professionals are warning that the upcoming legalization of cannabis may exacerbate the province's problem of premature and low-weight infants.

Alberta has the highest rate of premature infants, as well as low-weight births, in the country, according to new data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

The stubborn statistic has barely budged, despite medical professionals trying to improve infant and maternal health, said Dr. Duncan McCubbin, an obstetrician based in Medicine Hat, Alta.

In advance of legalization, Ottawa offers a crash course in cannabis law

When the University of Ottawa announced that it would be offering a two-week intensive course in cannabis law, co-teacher Megan D. Wallace didn’t expect it would be a newsworthy event.

“I didn’t think anyone would care,” says Wallace, who’s head of Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall’s Not-for-Profit and Charity Law Group. “But we’ve had 20 or 30 media inquiries, which I was really surprised by because it’s a class at a law school. I think this is just so new that people are intrigued by it.”

Cannabis sales won't balance budget

Those counting on help from cannabis sales to balance the provincial budget are in for a disappointment.

As far as Statistics Canada can tell, cannabis prices in this country have been dropping for the past three years, perhaps the past dozen years. Since weed-market watchers in the United States have found roughly the same thing, it’s probably true.

Or, maybe you envision traditionally smoking cannabis and the effects that come with it. However, you might think of the medicinal properties this plant contains, especially if you consume cannabis for medical purposes. Although THC and CBD are both well-known and commonly used cannabinoids, the cannabis plant contains many other medically beneficial cannabinoids including THCV. Although THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin) is similar to THC, it contains its own unique benefits. Read on to learn more about THCV and how you could potentially benefit from the consumption of this cannabinoid.

Like U.S. businesses, many Canadian cannabis companies have been operating “on the fringes” of the business world because of the federal cannabis status. Very soon, this will no longer be the case in Canada. Here are some businesses that are poised and ready to take the cannabis tech world by storm.
