Aphria announces new policy for corporate governance controls

Aphria Inc. says it is taking steps to improve its corporate governance by adopting a formal policy for how company insiders can invest in other cannabis companies and sit on their boards.

The grower of medical marijuana, which is based in Leamington, Ont., announced the new policy for its directors, officers and other key employees on Wednesday in a press release, adding that non-compliance would result in sanctions. However, Aphria didn’t disclose specifics and didn’t reply to a request for comment.

But the effects of the new measures are already being seen.

BC set to introduce marijuana legislation with years of fine tuning expected, says minister

Incoming marijuana legislation heralds momentous change for the approach to pot, but British Columbia Premier John Horgan questions if everyone will buy into the new legal system this summer.

Legislation regulating recreational marijuana in B.C. is expected to be introduced Thursday. The province is one of the last in Canada to table its marijuana rules as the country adapts to legalized pot.

Horgan said he expects the country to go through an extensive marijuana learning curve that will see some embracing the ability to purchase pot legally at private or government stores while others may stick to illegal suppliers.

Boreal offering courses on pot biz

Online courses covering a range of topics in the cannabis industry will be offered through College Boreal in anticipation of the upcoming legalization of its sale and use in Canada.

“These courses will focus on the production, sale of and marketing of cannabis and the financing of a cannabis business,” the college said in a release. “Each course is given over an eight-week period.”

The cannabis plant has been used in medicine for thousands of years, the college noted, but it is also used recreationally.

“The purpose of these training courses is to allow people to be informed and to gain perspective while preparing for jobs in this emerging industry.”

A guide to the mood-altering tinctures of the future

Whether you want to wake up or chill out, these five tinctures will help you embrace the holistic qualities of cannabis to the fullest — without having to get stoned!

Until recently, cannabis tinctures have occupied an unnecessarily obscure corner of the weed world. Made by decarboxylating plant matter, then concentrating the THC/CBD in a base of oil, glycerin, or ethanol, these miracle potions — enjoyed either topically or through oral consumption — are the perfect method of intake for anyone hoping to reap the medicinal benefits of cannabis without drawbacks like smoke inhalation and smelling like pot.

YouTube continues its cannabis purge and nobody knows why

A few weeks ago, Sam Houston, a California cannabis aficionado, was checking out some of his favorite YouTube channels when he noticed a trend.

One by one, accounts such as those run by users “Vader OG” and the horticulturalist known as Jorge Cervantes were being shut down. All were given the same ominous message: The channel’s content had been flagged for review and was found to violate YouTube’s guidelines.

Scientists really don’t know why marijuana makes some people more productive

Cannabis use is usually thought to impair our ability to pay attention or organize efficiently (and a lot of scientific research backs up that assumption to some extent). But there are also plenty of people who say smoking up helps them focus and get things done, writes Calvin Hughes.

Addiction psychiatrist Larissa Mooney says she hears this a lot.

10 things to know from Aphria's third-quarter report

Cannabis demand is budding, but it wasn't all good news for one of Canada's biggest marijuana growers.

This very well could be a game-changing year for the cannabis industry. In June, Canada's Senate will vote on bill C-45, more affably known as the Cannabis Act, which, if approved, could soon thereafter result in recreational marijuana sales being legal. The current timeline suggests sales could kick off in August or September.

Should patients who need medical marijuana move to where it’s legalized?

The medical marijuana system in Canada makes it so that any patient anywhere in the country always has easy access to the drugs they need, but what about those same patients in the USA?

If you’re a medical marijuana patient in Canada, you probably have little to no trouble accessing your medication.

In Canada, patients order their medical marijuana via online services and usually LP’s websites.

In the US, the situation is a bit different since medical marijuana is only legal in some states, and only to a certain extent in others.

The difference in illnesses that fall under the category of “treatable with medical marijuana” is significant from one state to another.
