Ontario's grey-market cannabis businesses chart paths to regulation

Business-owner Don Briere says he is about to secure leases on several storefronts across Toronto to fuel an aggressive expansion of his B.C.-based Weeds Glass and Gifts chain, which lists four locations as currently operating in Ottawa and Vancouver.

Is Canopy Growth Corp. (TSX:WEED) stock a buy after 40% jump?

It seems there is nothing that can stop Canopy Growth Corp. (TSX:WEED)(NYSE:CGC) from reaching new heights. The latest surprise came when Corona beer-maker Constellation Brands Inc. (NYSE:STZ) announced last week that it would inject another $5-billion in Canada’s cannabis producer, increasing its stake to 38%.

Constellation Brands’ new investment follows an initial purchase of about a 10% stake last year. This development has many positive dimensions for the Canopy Growth that’s working to establish its dominant position in both medical and recreational marijuana markets globally.

12 things you must know about Canopy Growth Corp.'s first-quarter report

The marijuana industry is barreling toward what will likely be the most important day in its history: Oct. 17, 2018. On this date, Canada officially makes it legal for licensed dispensaries to sell recreational marijuana to adults aged 18 or 19 (depending on the province) and older.

The landmark passage of the Cannabis Act in June by Parliament is expected to generate billions of dollars in added annual sales for pot companies to our north. It's this massive surge in sales, and strong expected demand, that's fueled investors to purchase marijuana stocks in spite of their alreadylofty valuations.

Should Canada follow the Netherlands' lead and create 'coffeeshops' for smoking weed?

From the outside, Boerejongens (“Farmer Boys” in Dutch) looks like an old-style apothecary. The only clue of what it might be is a small sticker on the door reading “coffeeshop.”

Inside, there is a wine-bar vibe – polished marble floors and counters, and gold fixtures, and only the slightest hint of background music.

At the counter you are greeted by a cannabis sommelier, dressed sharply in a crisp white shirt, bow tie, suspenders, dress pants and shiny shoes.
