The Surprising State That Could Become the 24th to Legalize Medical Marijuana

Next year promises to be action-packed in a variety of ways. Americans will be electing a new president, the make-up of Congress could once again shift, and more states are likely to be placing marijuana initiatives on their ballots to expand its use medically or recreationally (or both) as Ohio recently attempted with its November 2015 proposal.

Members of Congress Hope to Slash DEA's Cannabis Eradication Budget

The federal government is still spending millions of dollars eradicating marijuana plants, even spending money in states that have legalized cannabis. While law enforcement officials have claimed that they need these funds to help battle cartels, some members of Congress state that historical data shows that a vast majority of plants eradicated under Uncle Sam’s marijuana eradication program are merely wild plants descended from industrial hemp.

San Jose leaders eye changes to medical marijuana rules

SAN JOSE -- With just weeks to go before a December deadline for compliance, medical marijuana providers are still balking at some of San Jose's rules and city officials are offering to ease them.

Nineteen pot providers have been seeking to meet San Jose's regulatory requirements by December 18. The rules, adopted in June 2014, restrict pot stores to select industrial and commercial areas away from schools and parks and impose a host of security, tax payment and other requirements. Dispensaries that fail to meet the requirements by the deadline face closure.

Marijuana Arrests In New York City Are Down 40% Compared To Last Year

In 2014, New York City gave officers the discretion to issue those caught with less than 25 grams of marijuana a summons to appear, rather than arrest them. Officers can still arrest people if they are in possession of less than 25 grams of marijuana in New York City ”if the marijuana is burning, if the type of possession indicates intent to sell, if the individual has an outstanding warrant, or if the individual is in a location with special consideration, like a school.” When you compare the year-to-date marijuana arrest statistics to those from the same time last year, marijuana arrests are down significantly in New York City. Ukiah urged to consider changes to marijuana laws

The City of Ukiah is evaluating its current regulations on growing medical marijuana, and will likely have more discussions and perhaps recommended actions for the City Council soon, City Manager Sage Sangiacomo said at the board’s most recent meeting earlier this month.

“I know that the marijuana ad-hoc committee (which includes Council members Jim Brown and Maureen Mulheren) is working diligently reviewing the regulations and determining possible actions for the Ukiah City Council, and they may be brought forward for further discussion,” Sangiacomo said, responding to a city resident who urged the council to review its medical marijuana regulations in light of a regulatory package signed into law in October that requires state oversight of the entire industry.
