Sanders will propose nixing marijuana from federal list of dangerous drugs

Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders will announce his support Wednesday for removing marijuana from a list of the most dangerous drugs outlawed by the federal government — a move that would free states to legalize it without impediments from Washington.

The self-described democratic socialist senator from Vermont plans to share his proposal during a town hall meeting with college students that will be broadcast on the Internet across the country from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

“Too many Americans have seen their lives destroyed because they have criminal records as a result of marijuana use,” Sanders says in prepared remarks for the event provided to The Washington Post. “That’s wrong. That has got to change.”

Why are drugs illegal? You asked Google – here’s the answer

Every day, millions of internet users ask Google some of life’s most difficult questions, big and small. Our writers answer some of the most common queries

This is, of course, a flawed question but one that illustrates a major paradox in the UK and international laws on drugs. Some drugs – such as alcohol, caffeine and nicotine – are legal, whereas others – such as cannabis, cocaine and opium – are not. This has not always been the case.

WHY IS L.A. SPENDING YOUR MONEY TO SHUT A DISPENSARY FOR IMPERFECT PAPERWORK?

A downtown marijuana dispensary is fighting City Hall's efforts to shut it down. Toluca Lake Collective opened in 2006 and registered with the city in 2007 before a December deadline to do so, says owner and well-known weed activist Frank Sheftel. The problem with the city arose, he said, because he filed to obtain a Business Tax Registration Certificate at City Hall's Van Nuys annex instead of at City Halldowntown

At issue is whether  Toluca Lake Collective, which Sheftel originally opened on Riverside Drive but moved downtown to comply with city regulations, is one of Los Angeles' original pot shops. In 2007 the city enacted a moratorium on collectives, allowing only about 188 that existed to stay open.

After 33-pound marijuana traffic stop, agents raid Iowa homes

Officers conducted search warrants at two Iowa men's home Tuesday after they were charged in a drug traffic stop in Nebraska.

The search warrants were executed at homes in Fort Dodge.

Tyler Cervene, 22, and Bryce Loftus, 21, of Fort Dodge, were stopped on Sunday in Douglas County, Nebraska.  Officers reported finding about 33 pounds of marijuana in their vehicle.

The men were charged with intent to deliver marijuana and failure to affix a drug tax stamp.

Authorities said the men were transporting the marijuana from Colorado to Iowa.

Iowa officials reported finding "multiple narcotic related items" at one of the Fort Dodge homes.

The investigation into this case is still ongoing and additional charges are expected.

A Second Medical Marijuana Initiative Coming To Missouri?

I am a big fan of Missouri marijuana reform efforts, which if you read this blog often, than you probably know that already. I have always felt that if Missouri can reform its marijuana laws, recreational and/or medical, that it would speed up reform nationwide. I am from Oregon, born and raised, and when Oregon legalized recreational marijuana most news reports had the ‘duh, isn’t this overdue?’ vibe. Very few were shocked, and opponents in other states just chalked it up to ‘well, it’s Oregon, they are very liberal out there, especially in the Portland area, but our state is obviously way different.’

Arkansas Rejects Marijuana Legalization Proposal Because of Spelling Errors

Legalize it, so long as it's spelled correctly. Like, the weed and everything pertaining to the weed. Apparently, Arkansas paid no attention to the second part. A proposal to legalize weed in Arkansas was turned down due to spelling errors and “ambiguities in text."

Arkansas Attorney General, Leslie Rutledge, said “errors of grammar, punctuation and spelling” were the reason they had to shut it down, according to the Associated Press. The proposal, which was written by Marry Berry, a resident of Summit, Arkansas, called for free use of the plant, including growing and cultivating.

Landmark Case in Mexico's Supreme Court Could Pave the Way for Marijuana Legalization

On Wednesday, Mexico's Supreme Court will debate whether the prohibition of the consumption and cultivation of marijuana for personal use is unconstitutional. The Court will determine whether the prohibition of the consumption of marijuana -- and its cultivation for non-commercial ends -- violates the human right to the free development of one's personality. This landmark case could lead to the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes if followed up with legislation.

New documents detail marijuana found on Menominee Tribal land

Federal documents released Monday outline what authorities found on Menominee Tribal land before a search warrant was done last Friday.

On Friday near Suring, federal and local authorities say they seized 30,000 marijuana plants from the land. No one has been arrested.

Now they say someone from Colorado was growing it.

Throughout the allegations, the Tribe maintains it was growing hemp for research, not marijuana.

Days before the thousands of plants were loaded into dump trucks, Menominee Police officers and a Bureau of Indian Affairs agent toured the land.

The affidavits show inside this barn authorities found more than eleven-hundred plants drying, restricted ventilation and workers with no protective gear.
