Control marijuana 'invasion,' Detroiters tell planners

Concerned Detroiters spoke out against medical marijuana shops at a public hearing Thursday night and pleaded with city officials to implement new regulations to stifle the industry's growth.

"There's some way we have to control it because this is like an invasion," longtime Detroit resident Nancy Bitzarakis said at the hearing.

Bitzarakis was among several residents who spoke at the city Planning Commission's hearing at a near-capacity city hall auditorium, with most supporting a crackdown on the marijuana dispensaries. Residents described an ever-increasing number of dispensaries opening up near their neighborhoods, inviting undesirable activities -- people smoking joints in parking lots, for example -- and an atmosphere damaging to children.

Proven medical benefits would open cannabis debate, says Health Minister

Health Minister Howard Quayle was quizzed in the House of Keys overs whether he would support the use of cannabis or cannabis derivatives for medical use.

Replying to the question from Lib Van leader Kate Beecroft (Douglas South), Mr Quayle said: ‘The department will consider supporting the use of any medication, irrespective of its origin, that has a proven evidential basis.

‘A number of preparations derived from cannabis are undergoing clinical trials and some already have product licences as prescription-only medicines for specific conditions. There are no plans to support the introduction of unlicensed unproven medications.’

Bernie Sanders wants to end the federal ban on marijuana

Bernie Sanders has called for federal government to remove marijuana from the list of outlawed drugs — opening the way for states that wish to legalize the drug to do so.

The Democratic presidential hopeful said it was time to “to remove the federal prohibition on marijuana” in a speech at George Mason University on Wednesday, where thousands of college students gathered to hear him speak.

Mr Sanders was also careful not to ignore racial justice issues, and used this speech as an opportunity to call out racial bias in criminal justice related to drug sentencing.

Georgia law enforcement hesitant over medical marijuana growth

ATLANTA -- The men and women who fight illegal drugs for a living say that if Georgia is going to allow the in-state growth of medical cannabis, the state needs to keep a lid on it.

"We do oppose all cultivation" of cannabis, Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson, president of the Georgia Sheriffs' Association, said at a state hearing in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Sheriffs had also opposed the new law this year that allows some Georgians to possess a kind of liquid medicine derived from cannabis.
