Marijuana gets only quick puffs in GOP debate in Boulder, Colorado

Colorado's new green income stream has received only two very brief mentions during the Republican debate at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Of those, only one was a real question, direct to Gov. John Kasich of Ohio: "Given the budget pressures in Ohio and other states, is that a revenue stream you'd like to have?"

"Sending mixed messages to kids about drugs is a disaster," Kasich replied, before redirecting the conversation to add his thoughts to a previous question about income inequality.

The other, earlier reference to marijuana was nothing more than a joke, when Ted Cruz joked about sharing a "famous Colorado brownie" with the moderators. It was good wit, but didn't address the financial question that would be asked later.

Sanders proposes nixing marijuana from federal list of dangerous drugs

Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders announced his support Wednesday for removing marijuana from a list of the most dangerous drugs outlawed by the federal government — a move that would free states to legalize it without impediments from Washington.

The self-described “democratic socialist” senator from Vermont shared his proposal during a nearly two-hour town hall meeting with college students that he said was broadcast on the Internet to about 300 campuses across the country from George Mason University in Fairfax County, Va.

Will evidence eventually trump politics?

It’s been an amazing week for drug policy reformers.

On the day that an overwhelming majority of Canadians elected a new prime minister who has promised to legalise and regulate cannabis, I wrote about a remarkable document drafted by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the international body tasked with helping shape global drug policies. The two-page paper aimed to “clarify the position of UNODC” on one of the most pressing issues of the drug debate – how to minimise harm and protect the health and human rights of 300 million people who use drugs across the planet.

Mexico's top court postpones marijuana hearing

Mexico's Supreme Court postponed on Wednesday a much-anticipated hearing on a citizen group's bid to legally smoke marijuana, a potential landmark case in a country beset by drug violence.

While dozens of legalization supporters gathered outside the court in the capital's historic center, a judicial official said the justices decided to delay the debate until next week or a later date.

The case was brought by the Mexican Society for Responsible and Tolerant Personal Use, whose Spanish acronym spells "SMART," which is seeking permission to grow and consume its own pot.

Bernie Sanders Will Legalize Marijuana? Democrat Wants To Change DEA Policy

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is embracing marijuana reform in a move that could help him win over pot-smoking voters. The Vermont senator said Wednesday he would call for marijuana to be removed from the Drug Enforcement Administration's schedule of controlled substances.

A federal policy shift would allow states to choose their own marijuana policies free of most federal interference. The DEA classifies marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug on the asumption that it has a high potential for abuse. It's regulated more tightly than other drugs that do much more harm, including cocaine, opium and methamphetamines.

Issue 3 foes warn legalizing marijuana would endanger children

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A pair of health professionals warned Wednesday that if Ohioans approve Issue 3 in next week's election and legalize marijuana, it could pose serious harm to children, from pre-K age through teen years.

Among their concerns: That legalizing marijuana will lead to greater exposure and experimentation by teens as they view it as something that is accepted and safe by society. And for preschoolers, the presence of marijuana products in households heightens chances that they could be ingested, perhaps leading to death.

Many Republican Presidential Candidates Are Secretly OK With Legal Pot

I’m not sure who decided to stage a Republican presidential debate in the liberal bastion of Boulder, Colorado, and whether it’s an amusing coincidence or subtle trolling. Many local residents are, as the New York Times recently noticed, slightly puzzled and none too pleased about the influx of national Republicans. As a former Boulderite, I can report that a big reason for their discontent is the traditional Republican attitude toward marijuana: This is the party, after all, that christened “Just Say No” and launched the War on Drugs.

NY Legislators Introduce Recreational Marijuana Bill

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Now that New York has legalized medical marijuana, many advocates are pushing for decriminalizing the drug entirely.

Such was the top of a public hearing Wednesday at Buffalo City Hall.

Downstate Senator Liz Kreuger and Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes have introduced the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act, which would legalize the drug for people over the age of 21.

They say the cost of criminalization of the drug is too great compared to the benefits.
